Printmaking Classes

in NYC

Block printing is the most direct kind of making: you carve, you ink, you press. The analog quality and the small element of chance are what make it worthwhile.

Our public printmaking classes in NYC are single-session drop-ins: show up and leave with finished work. You'll design a relief block, carve it, ink it, and pull multiple prints. Iteration is where the excitement is!

People often describe printmaking as meditative, you get into a rhythm of carving, then a small thrill when you peel back the block. Good for a solo afternoon, a date night, or seeing a friend on a weeknight.

Beginner-friendly. No experience required. All materials included. Take home the stamp you carved and every print you make.

1. Arrive and settle in

Plan to get here a few minutes early, grab some loose-leaf tea, and find a spot. Your instructor will open with a quick intro to printmaking and the tools. You'll be sitting near other people who are also excited to learn printmaking techniques. We offer this workshop as a part of our Cohort Program, largely consisting of adult beginners!

2. Design & carve your stamp

Sketch your design on paper first (we'll walk you through positive and negative space, which is easier than it sounds), then transfer it to a soft carving block. The carving is the meditative part.

3. Ink, print, repeat!

Roll ink on your block and pull your first print. The first few prints are tests, then we can continue making prints on various surfaces. The beauty of printmaking is in the imperfections and the immediate reveals! Each print looks a little different, and that's the charm of it.

You’ll try printing multiple times, and you leave with everything you made plus your stamp to use at home.
