The Limited Edition

A print + bookmaking intensive at Drawing Room

Combine the ephemeral nature of printmaking with the storytelling abilities of a book.

A book is a sequence held between two covers. An edition is how one idea reaches many hands. When printmaking meets the book, every page becomes a decision and a record: what comes first, what earns the turn, what the reader is holding at the end. Each fold, stitch, and pull from the press is a small choice that shapes what someone else will feel, and each copy in the edition is slightly different from the last. Each is a record of the hands that made it.

Learn the craft of both print and binding, work through your ideas alongside a small cohort, and leave with editions of your own to share.

An 8-session journey to explore the art of sequential storytelling through printmaking and bookbinding.

We’ll learn to print limited edition art books of our own unique stories, from start to finish – design, print, assembling. We’ll dive deep into relief printing techniques, and learn to create and editions of hand-bound books.

Beginners will be guided through foundations; more experienced makers are invited to use techniques they know in a new framework to break habits and find their own voice. Shared with a group of up to 16 people.

What we’ll cover in this intensive

What makes a book

We'll open with an intro to art books, zines, and the world of small press, where sequential storytelling meets printmaking. Then we'll walk through the book format together, look at what it can hold, and start sketching and planning your first book.

Coptic Stitch

We’ll be learning the coptic stitch method of bookbinding. A unique binding technique that will allow us to construct a hardcover book with several hand-printed pages.

Open Studio

A working session. Final assembling, refining, or catching up on anything you want to push further. Progress share at the top of the session.

The Group Zine

We close with a final critique: the group walks through everyone's books together and then collaborate on a group zine, one page per person, printed and bound before you leave. You go home with your own editions, a shared piece the room made together, and the practice to keep going.

Showcase at Drawing Room Night

We invite all intensive participants to showcase their works at our seasonal event, Drawing Room Night! Open to members, friends, and the public, it’s an opportunity to show off your work to a large, engaged audience. We’ll have food, drinks, and cake!

What we’ll explore

Printing Press

A printing press is a mechanical tool that evenly transfers ink from your plate to paper, creating crisp lines and rich textures that hand printing can’t always achieve. Turning the wheel and revealing a perfect impression is pure magic every time. Using the press connects you to centuries of artists and opens up new possibilities for depth, scale, and creative experimentation.

Bookbinding

We’re combining two mediums and practices to create our objects in this Journey. We’ll learn printmaking techniques, but also learn and refine our bookbinding skills to create unique, one-of-a-kind art objects.

Editioning

An edition is a set of identical prints taken from the same printing surfaces (referred to as a matrix). Editions can be limited, preserving the rarity of each print, or open, allowing the image to live on in new impressions. Editioning allows printmakers to distinguish their work from digital reproduction prints. Every print is both original and part of something larger.

Your Instructor

Angie’s (she/her) practice is rooted in process, repetition, and chance. She collects fleeting moments, unexpected textures, and visions of fantasy creatures to reflect memory in the tangible forms of traditional drawing, collage, print, zines, and books.

What makes up an Intensive at Drawing Room?

Dive deeper and build confidence

While Intensives are still open-level and beginner-friendly, we dig deeper and push ourselves to gain confidence, practice, and see improvement.

Intensives are great for when you know you’re really interested in pushing yourself in a particular area. It’s an opportunity to actively create and discuss the philosophy of creativity—exploring how we can weave the practices into our daily lives with intention and purpose.

Unique program design at a great value

Each Intensive is designed with intention and care for the Drawing Room community by professional working artists that reflect their own practice.

We focus on learning and deepening new skills while also connecting with the group over food, drink, and conversation.

Recurring schedule and accountability

Office Hours with Instructors

Intensive students and alumni have the ability to schedule time with Instructors to receive additional support, access to class equipment, and ask questions as you work on independent projects during Open Hours.
