Writers’ Room

Writing feeds your creativity from the inside out.

Writing teaches you to listen closely, notice deeply, and make sense of your thoughts. It’s not about having the right words or calling yourself a writer. It’s about giving language to the ideas, images, and questions that are already moving through you.

Even if you’ve never written seriously before, the practice often feels surprisingly natural, opening new ways of seeing, making, and connecting across your creative life.

Writers’ Room is about building on ideas together with a small group over 8 weeks.

The format is inspired by the collaborative, energetic format of writers’ rooms, but adapted for curiosity and play. We’ll go from learning from examples to diving into big questions about everyday life. The emphasis is on low-pressure conversation, exploration, and seeing what happens when you let ideas be a little messy. No experience required.

Sessions in this Intensive

Session 1: Mon, Apr 13 from 6:30-9pm

“Finding the Room”

We begin by building the writers’ room together, with a shared dinner. You’ll receive your writing toolkit, settle in with a grounding check in, and set intentions for your project. Through short readings across genres, we’ll explore how form shapes voice and possibility, before closing with your first generative writing prompt in a room grounded in collaboration rather than completion.

Casual dinner provided (think finger foods). Allergen-free options available.

Session 2: Mon, Apr 20 from 6:30-9pm

“What Are You Writing, Anyway?”

We shift our focus to clarifying what you’re writing and why. After a brief check in and warm up, we’ll look closely at loglines and opening lines from films, books, and essays to understand how ideas take shape and invite a reader in. You’ll workshop your pitch in small groups. We’ll ask questions to refine your idea, and begin outlining a clear path forward for your piece.

Session 3: Mon, Apr 27 from 6:30-9pm

“Getting Out of Your Head”

Here we turn toward the physical world. We’ll play with sensory detail and notice how sound, texture, and place can bring writing to life. You’ll hear early pages from others and start sharing your own, learning how to listen and respond in ways that feel generous and encouraging. Expect things to feel a little messier and more alive.

Session 4: Mon, May 4 from 6:30pm-9pm

“The Characters on the Page”

This session focuses on voice and character, whether you’re writing about yourself, someone imagined, or someone in between. We’ll explore how tone, perspective, and small choices shape who shows up on the page. It’s also a chance to pause as a group, check in on how things are feeling, and notice what patterns or questions are starting to emerge.

We’re going on a trip! Tickets for admission are included.

Session 5: Mon, May 11 from 6:30-9pm

“Changing the Scene” (A Field Trip)

We take the writers’ room on the road. This session steps outside the usual setting to shake things loose and reconnect with your work in a different way. Through shared observation, conversation, and time spent writing together elsewhere, you’ll explore how changing your environment can shift your relationship to your story. Tickets or admission for the outing are included.

Session 6: Mon, May 18 from 6:30-9pm

“Listening Closely”

Now we slow down and listen to the language itself. This session invites you to pay attention to rhythm, pacing, and word choice, and how small adjustments can change how a piece feels. Through shared excerpts and thoughtful feedback, you’ll begin revising with more confidence and intention, without losing what made the work feel alive in the first place.

Session 7: Tues, May 26 from 6:30-9pm
(Note: alternate day due to Memorial Day)

“Stepping Back”

This session brings things together. You’ll hear more complete excerpts from across the group and reflect on how perspective and point of view shape meaning. We’ll also start preparing for the final reading, keeping it low stress and supportive, with space to ask questions and get comfortable sharing your work aloud.

Session 8: Mon, June 1 from 6:30-9pm

“The Reading”

We end with a celebration. Writers share excerpts from what they’ve been working on in an open invite reading. Guests are welcome, as are members of the Drawing Room community. Expect wine, cheese, sweets, and plenty of cheering. It’s less about performance and more about honoring the work you’ve done, and celebrating the room you built together.

Cheese, wine, & sweets included–its a celebration! (Allergen-free options available)

What makes up an Intensive?

Dive deeper and build confidence

Much of Drawing Room programming is about exploration and trying new things.

While Intensives are still open-level and beginner-friendly, we dig deeper and push ourselves to gain confidence, practice, and see improvement.

Intensives are great for when you know you’re really interested in pushing yourself in a particular area.

Beyond making: a creative life

Drawing Room is all about a commitment to living a creative life. We use Intensives as an opportunity to not only actively create, but also discuss the philosophy of creativity—exploring how we can weave the practices into our daily lives with intention and purpose.

Unique program design at a great value

Each Intensive was designed by a collaborating team of practicing artists, specifically for the Drawing Room community and ethos. We not only focus on learning new skills but about connecting with the group over food, drink, and conversation.

You get a great value by committing to a recurring program, but there is truly nothing else quite like them, either!!

Recurring schedule and accountability
